Black Gold is the organization dedicated to building a profile that will spread from local to national in the name of the Auchengeich mining disaster.
As many will be aware the 50th anniversary of the disaster is fast approaching. 2009 will mark fifty years of one of Scotland´s biggest disasters of any kind and the Black Gold project will be using the year´s countdown to mark the tragedy with a wide range of spectres designed and skilled to highlight such a tragic event.
Having happened so long ago the need to keep this memoriam in the minds of the present and future generations has become increasingly paramount. We believe, through the creative arts, we can reach a broad age-group of proportional tastes. We are leaving nothing unturned and through creative works like music and arts we can add a bit more to this project than just a message of remembrance in the local newspaper (although that would also be very appreciative).
We have recruited an author and a music band so far and we´re looking at the possibility of a theatre play. Being open minded we are at this moment looking at other options in other fields but mainly the project is, by all accounts, a cog-in-the-wheel to set in motion the awareness and fund-raising for a tragic event that took place in Scotland´s history, our history.
In the lead up to the 50th anniversary we´ll be holding various Speakers´ Nights and other events that will be accompanied with regular media cuttings. There´s no getting away from it; this project is very touching but with all the people involved we´re sure we are going to give the people who suffered - and for the memory of the people who lost their lives - a fitting landmark project to be proud of.
Black Gold project was founded by Joan Clark, Social Convenyor of the Auchengeich Miners´ Club.
The title, "Black Gold" is credited to Ray Martin from the band Shifter X .
