On the 18th of September 1959 the Auchengeich Colliery suffered a devastating blow when many deaths occurred in the name of a humble hard day´s work.

One death would have been tragic enough but forty-seven hard-working men of all age-groups would never return home from their shifts. Forty-seven families would never again see their fathers, husbands, sons, brothers and uncles. Escalating the tragedy; a whole community endured a tragic event that will never be forgot.

In the countdown to the 50th anniversary of the Auchengeich mining disaster an innovative project titled: Black Gold, has been set up in memory of the forty-seven men who lost their lives.

Founded primarily by Joan Clark (Social Convenyor of the Auchengeich Miners´ Social Club); the project is designed to raise awareness of one of Scotland´s worst disasters of its kind. It´s purpose is to mark and refresh this devastating event and loss and equally as important: the aim of the Black Gold project is to highlight, to remember and to honour all those involved.

So far we´ve put together a package comprising of artists and creative souls that have both the power in song and in word to bring the name of Auchengeich and its people onto an international platform. Please see About for more details.
